Message from the Student Body President:
This is the year to act. Not only is it an election year in our nation, but also an opportunity for students to participate on campus and make opinions know regarding various initiatives and other items of concern. To support this effort, Student Council is taking great strides to ensure that the student’s opinions are voiced around campus, that we are able to work together with other facets of the university to solve issues, and that we come together as a community.
So far this year, Student Council and other organizations have done and seen a lot.
- President Obama and former South African President de Klerk visited campus.
- Construction on various buildings has been completed and more construction is scheduled to be completed at the end of the summer on the new Student Fitness Center, TJ, Toomey Hall, and various landscaping projects.
- The MACURH Conference was held at Missouri S&T: bringing college students from across the nation to our campus for an intense weekend of activities.
- The Student Health Services on campus are continually being improved with the help of all students and a new student advisory committee.
- Missouri S&T completed its 10-year accreditation visit from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
- The St. Pat statue, originally located in the library, has been bronzed and placed outside in the mall of campus.
- Legislators are looking to improve the Access Missouri Grant for those with need-based aid requirements.
- The Student Activity Fee for 2009 - 2010 will receive a zero percent increase and the contingency plan approved by General Council will be enacted.
- The Annual Student Leaders' Awards on April 16, 2009 recognized those individuals who have been outstanding this year.
- Four students have been selected to serve on the Chancellor's Committee on Diversity and Inclusion:
- Stephanie Rostad
- Karissa Braaten
- Julian Davenport
- Amiel Weerasinghe
- Although the economic downturn has thrown some punches at the University it appears that the state will maintain a zero percent change in appropriations for Missouri S&T.
- The next Student Representative to the Board of Curators from Missouri S&T will be announced this summer.
The year isn't over yet. I want to challenge you to get involved if you aren’t already. Find something on campus that you can take pride in and display your passion. It is through these efforts that our community will grow.
